Big Mama Thornton blues heaven
Blues singer and songwriter Willie Mae Thornton was born in Montgomery, Alabama, but is known to have had a profound effect on Texas music. She is most famous for recording "Hound Dog," for which she got a total of $500, and "Ball and Chain." A couple of other folks did pretty well by these songs later, recording them as covers. Big Mama bitterly lamented in the twilight of her life that "Hound Dog" was her song, and not that guy with the pelvis.  Ain't nothin' but the blues.
